JOB DESCRIPTION.
JOB TITLE: SCP Project Worker
LOCATION: The post holder will move between St Columbanus, Ballivor,
Col?iste Clavin, Longwood and Boyne Community School, Trim.
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed Term Contract
REPORTING TO: SCP Coordinator
SOUTH MEATH SCHOOL COMPLETION PROGRAMME (SCP).
The South Meath SCP works with children and young people in St
Columbanus Primary School, Ballivor, Col?iste Clavin, Longwood and
Boyne Community School, Trim Post-Primary schools. The Programme works
with students, the school, the family and the community to encourage
students to reach their full potential, and prevent early school
leaving in the educational system.
The desired IMPACT of SCP is retention of a young person to completion
of the leaving certificate, equivalent qualification or suitable level
of educational attainment which enables them to transition into
further education, training or employment.
The THREE CORE OUTCOMES of the School Completion Programme are;
* Improved Attendance
* Improved Retention
* Improved Participation.
SCP work focuses on targeting and providing supports to young people
identified to be most at risk of early school leaving and includes:
* Identifying and supporting children at risk of not reaching their
potential in the educational system because of poor attendance,
participation and retention via initiatives such as breakfast clubs;
homework clubs; afterschool supports; mentoring programmes; and
therapeutic interventions;
* Ensuring that schools have in place the appropriate procedures to
monitor, identify and respond to attendance, participation and
retention issue;
* Implementing transfer programmes to support young people
transitioning from primary to post primary school.
THE POSITION:
The SCP Project Worker will work as part of a team within the South
Meath SCP Cluster Group providing support for students in school,
after school and during holiday time and in the out of school setting.
SCP PROJECT WORKER DUTIES:
* Identifying and responding to the education welfare needs of
targeted young people in particular those identified as at risk of
leaving school early.
* Planning, delivery and evaluation of needs-led and evidence-based
programmes / activities for young people both individually and in
groups as set out in the SCP Retention Plan.
* Operating efficient office procedures and administration systems
e.g. filing, keeping records and to submit any standard clerical
procedures and all other relevant reports on time.
* Work within the TUSLA national guidelines for the protection and
welfare of children as well as SCP and school policies relevant to the
individual school setting.
* Working collaboratively and networking with the other Education
and Welfare Services, Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) and
Educational Welfare Officers (EWO), the School Care Team, Principal(s)
and other professionals to identify the young people to be targeted
for the Project and to plan coordinated interventions for those young
people across appropriate services which compliment SCP interventions.
* Advocating on behalf of targeted participants as appropriate.
* Planning own work schedule and set work targets in consultation
with the SCP Coordinator.
* Keeping up to date with local, regional and national developments
in the education and welfare sector, in relation to both policy and
practice.
* Working under and reporting to the SCP Coordinator and Local
Management Committee in relation to all aspects of the project.
* Undertaking any other duty that may be decided by the Coordinator
or Local Management Committee from time to time.
PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR THE POST OF SCP PROJECT WORKER.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
_PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS_
QQI Level 7 degree in the area of:
* Education,
* Youth/Community Work,
* Psychology,
* Social Science/Social Care; or
* Related Discipline
_EXPERIENCE_
* A minimum of one year paid or four years? voluntary work
experience of working with at risk children and young people in a
supportive environment.
* Proficient at planning, implementing and delivering and evaluating
programmes.
* Experience of working collaboratively with agencies.
* Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately to children
across the target group age range.
_CAR/DRIVING LICENCE_
The successful applicant must have access to a car and hold a full
clean driving licence.
_PERSON SPECIFICATION_
* Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with
a wide range of contacts and build and maintain effective working
relationships
* Ability to be proactive, use own initiative and work effectively
within a pressurised environment.
* Good written communications skills, including ability to produce
reports in accordance with Tusla Guidelines.
* Ability to plan, deliver and evaluate interventions both in
individual and group settings
* Good IT skills, including Word processing & Excel or other
Database packages.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Paid or voluntary experience working with young people in an
education setting.
* Experience of planning, delivering and evaluating evidence based
programmes.
* Knowledge of the education system and the factors associated with
early school leaving.
* Relevant experience of delivering group work and individual work
in a school setting.
* Ability to manage budgets and produce financial reports.
